Each electrical outlet serves as a node on the network and any device, such as a digital media adapter or a PC, that's connected to the electrical system via an adapter is part of the LAN. Zyxel's PLA-401 Powerline Ethernet Adapter / Extender device is based on the new spec - HomePlug AV- which specifically address the need for QoS for latency-sensitive services such as HDTV and VoIP ( Voice Over Internet Protocol ). The theoretic throughput of HomePlug AV products is 200Mbps, but real-world performance is pegged at around 100Mbps.

Setting up the PLA-401 is as simple as can be. To start, you'll need at least two adapters: one for your router and another for whatever device you're networking. For convenience Zyxel have bundled the Powerline Homeplug in a nice two unit package which will get your network started and can be easily expanded by purchasing additional Powerline Home Plug Units.
