A VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) gateway (or PSTN gateway) is a device which converts telephone calls into IP, allowing them to be transmitted via a data network. VoIP gateways can be used to convert incoming PSTN or telephone lines to VoIP/SIP or to connect a traditional PBX/phone system to an IP network.

Both analogue and digital gateways are generally available, with most analogue units supporting up to 24 lines. Digital units allow connection of one or more BRI ISDN lines.
