BT Featureline is a version of an anlogue telephone line that provides basic PBX functionality and allows calls to be received and then transferred to another telephone line. This means that if you want 10 office extensions, BT will install 10 telephone lines which will enable calls to be received and transferred to any of the other telephone lines within the featureline group. In this expample of 10 extensions you would pay quarterly line rental for 10 telephone lines plus the additional featureline surcharge (approx £44 per line per quarter rental x 10 - £440.00 per quarter line rental). When you compare this ongoing cost with a typicall phone system installation for 10 extensions which would typically only have 4 telephone lines shared between 10 extensions (approx £44.00 per line per quarter rental x 4 = 176.00 per quarter) This would mean an additional rental charge of £264.00 per quarter to use featurelines which is £1056.00 per year extra line rental, which over a five year period would equate toover £5000.00 additional line rental.

Featureline Telephone Lines will require that you dial 9 before making an external call so we do not recommend that they are connected to a telephone system, becuase on most telephone systems it is usually also set to dial 9 for an outside line - this means that when you press 9 on your telephone system extension you sieze a line ready for your call and with a Featureline you would then have to dial another 9 to tell the featureline that you are making an external call, so in effect you are connecting a telephone system to a telephone system and there is no point in that.

BT will usually try to provide Featurelines instead of standard analogue telephone lines and in most cases try to tie in the customer on a 5 year contract with the offer of free installation. The reason for this is that no other telecoms provider can offer alternative call packages over BT featurelines so the customer cannot benefit from potentially lower call charges, so the financial benefit of free installation is quickly erased with higher call charges over the period of the 5 year contract term.
